Club History

Coolangatta & Tweed Heads Golf Club has a proud history. From humble beginnings in 1926, it has grown to become one of Australia’s largest golfing complexes.

1927 CLUB INCEPTION

Coolangatta & Tweed Heads Golf Club was formed in 1927 after a dedicated group of locals held a public meeting at the Coolangatta Town Hall on 12 June 1926 to lobby for a new a golf course. The decision was made to build the course on Crown Land, where Gold Coast Airport stands today, hence the name Coolangatta & Tweed Heads Golf Club.

1936 CLUB RELOCATED

When difficulties arose in the construction of the original golf course in 1928, the committee went in search of a new location. Potential sites included the land surrounding Currumbin Creek and Piggabeen, but it was a portion of land owned by the late Jim Soorley, the present site, that caught the committee’s attention in August 1930. The first nine holes were completed and the Club was officially opened on 4 December 1932.

1939 CONSTRUCTION OF NEW CLUB HOUSE

In 1938 the land covering the initial nine hole course was purchased from Jim Soorley and in August 1939 the late H.L Anthony M.H.R opened the new clubhouse on the site where it stands today.

In 1951, the second nine holes were completed; in 1974, the third nine holes completed; and in 1981, the final nine holes completed.

PRESENT

Today, the total area of the Coolangatta & Tweed Heads Golf Club property is 101 hectares. It is a dedicated wildlife reserve with an abundance of native flora and fauna.

The Club has hosted many tournaments, including the Queensland Open. Many great golfers have played its challenging courses, including Greg Norman (winner of the 1986 Qld Open), David Graham, Graham Marsh, Sam Snead, Gary Player, Arnold Palmer, Bernhard Langer, Bobby Locke, Payne Stewart, Tom Kite and the great Norman Von Nida.

The Club hosts major golfing events including the Twin Towns Open, the Renay Appleby Day and the Greg Norman Junior Masters.
